Geocell® foam glass Gravel is a high quality insulating material made from 100% recycled glass.

Geocell® foam glass gravel is quite versatile because of it's unique light weight, load bearing, draining and insulating properties providing a sustainable replacement for conventional building materials.

Excellent thermal resistance capability – (certified conductivity of 0.08 W/mK).

High compressive strength – the lattice structure creates a high compressive strength of 275 kN/m² at compaction factor 1,3 : 1.
This is aquivalent to 27,5 t/m². Compressive strength (10% compression) 570 kN/m² (57 t/m²).

Closed cell – nil capillary action.

Superior hydraulic conductivity – the uniformed grain size and no fines create the highest degree of drainage capacity without causing settlement to the building or slab.

Inert – meets the highest standards for inert building material. Leaching tests did not show any adverse effects.

100% ecological – made from 99% recycled glass.

Light weight – low density 150 kg/m³.

Fire resistance – In compliance with EN Class A1 sintering point above 700°C.

The selection of appropriate insulation material is especially crucial in old buildings. GEOCELL® combines a drainage layer and insulation in a single product, thus reducing building height. Moreover, GEOCELL® is diffusible, an important property for an insulating material when humidity is an issue.
GEOCELL® offers a breathable insulating floor system made from waste glass that can be reused or recycled at any time.

The renovation of a basement presents many difficulties especially in period properties. The management of moisture, combined with increasing insulation values without impacting a sites existing structure can prove challenging. External ground levels and foundation footings can impact the work involved and thus the cost and risk in a project. Confined spaces for the excavation and disposal of material can increase these costs further.

The advent of roof gardens is becoming increasing popular. Utilising a previously unused space to grow vegetation for outdoor amenity can pose problems from an engineering standpoint. New builds obviously enjoy a pre-design stage but challenges do still arise. Placing a living and constantly changing body of vegetation onto a roof space requires serious consideration in design and material selection. Water-laden soils will impose increased loads and should be managed correctly.

The identification of pyrite contamination within a building is most unfortunate and obviously must be dealt with. The required remediation work can be substantial, exposing the areas of concern whilst limiting the stresses on the building along with difficult access for materials into and out of the building. New regulations (IS 398) detail that the replacement aggregate filled into the excavated floor must be certified that it is low in pyrite content. Thus once the concrete, insulation and hardcore are taken out, new material must be installed.

Challenges:
  1. Maintaining insulation values within the building.
  2. Installing SR21 as a hardcore replacement.
  3. Manipulating the SR21 between building obstructions.
  4. Resources required to carry out the work.
  5. Ensuring that pyrite does not exist in the replacement material.

Invariably where structures are built or have been built in areas where poor soil conditions exist, innovative solutions are required. Chemical barriers and or physical membranes isolate the water from the external water tank wall. Typically the external wall soil will be excavated and gravel infilled to facilitate the flow of water away from the wall via a drain. Challenges exist in damaging the membrane or barrier when installing the infill. Also it is important that the volume of infill does not place excess force on the tank wall.
